A platform for synthesized finance tracking.

Problem

Finances can be intimidating and Canadians believe retirement is unreachable in this economy.

Budgeting and planning savings and debt payments aren't streamlined. Without encouragement, financial literacy, and transparency in finances, this causes motivation paralysis.

People easily get overwhelmed when comparing themselves to those that are financially free and believe they don't have enough to achieve that same financial stability.

Solution

Create a platform that synthesizes financial institutions to transparently track users financial health in mobile & desktop friendly dashboards.

Objective

Motivate users to save and pay off debt through digestible milestones that helps take steps towards financial freedom.

Approach

Using the end-to-end design thinking method to build out a user-centred design.

    1. Define

    During this phase I scoped out the features and pain points to be addressed. This included: financial literacy, tracking savings, tips to pay off debt, and dynamic calculators to plan goals.

    1. Competitors

    I analyzed competitors and finance apps to find a unique position for my vision. I noticed that no platform allows all your finances to be tracked in one place.

    1. Empathize

    My studies showed that people either don't budget, track budgets mentally or in a spreadsheet. Only one mentioned using an app. All options needed manual maintenance to an extent.

    1. Surveys

    I conducted a survey to see people's goals, budgeting methods, and investments. "Spend first, save what's left," was prominent for those with no investments or budgeting strategies.

    1. User Journey

    From here, I defined two key features: goals for saving vs paying off debt. After creating user flows for this, the scope was too big and I eventually focused on creating a fund goal first.

    1. Diverging Ideas

    I rapidly wireframed for what a savings vs loans dashboard could look like. I also considered key actions like creating a new goal, editing an existing one, and calculators for planning.

    1. Converging Ideas

    From here I started wireframing and creating low & high fidelity mockups. I quickly crafted the screens for the user flow of creating a new goal.

    1. Execution

    I am currently building out design systems and high fidelity mockups to prepare for prototyping. During this phase, I'm establishing tokens, atomic design, components & layouts.

Next steps

Prototype the user journey for creating a new fund goal. This will include button interactions, forms, and dynamic calculators to compare payment options based on deposit vs timeline goals.
